The due date is 3/30 but since they are twins they will be early!

I cast on the Umbilical Cord Hat (pattern can be found in the first Stitch n Bitch book) on 11/28 and finished the first one on 12/5. I knit it with Louisa Harding's Baby Kashmir, in a Rose color and using size 4 dpns. I shortened the i-cord at the top of the hat since it is smaller than it would be if I used the size 7 needles and worsted weight yarn.

It turned out really cute and the parents-to-be love it! They wanted to keep it, but I want to finish the 2nd one, make a pair of socks for each baby and buy a romper to match each hat and socks.

The 2nd hat is on the needle in a Plum colorway.

Well, It's Official!

I'm having twin granddaughters and they are fraternal!!!! Time is flying! I finally finished my grandson's sock that has been on the needle since June, 2008! Cast on the 2nd sock and must get that finished.

I am going to be busy knitting and quilting for the next six months as my son informed me today that he and the love of his life are having twins! They were completely shocked by that news and so very happy! My excitement level as been out of control all day! I didn't know what to do with myself. ;) Too excited to sit still long enough to knit. Soon we will learn what these two munchkins will be; boy and a girl, two girls, two boys? I'm hoping for one of each! We do need girls as I have three grandsons!

I am a proud and blessed grandma!

Knitting Time

I'm still knitting and have been working on my Mead Scarf that I started last summer (I think). It's been a long time since I have quilted. I'm excited and need to get some of these WIPs done!

My son, oldest grandson and son's girlfriend were here visiting over the weekend and my grandson fell while skimboarding at the beach and broke his tibia in two places. I work on Elizabeth here and there and am looking at finishing my unfinished projects as well!

Some time ago, I blogged about frogging my grandson's raglan sweater as I felt it would be too small. Well, I decided to go ahead and finish it. I pulled it out Sunday and finished the body on Monday. It's been a great way to continue practicing Portuguese style knitting.

Knitting in this style, my yarn tension is much better and I can get into a very smooth rhythm. It is also easier on my hands and wrists.

Today is also my grandson's 3rd birthday! Amazing! I also bought two of her knitting pins.

I spent a couple of hours this afternoon practicing the knit and purl stitch. It is very easy to pick up; the knit stitch is a little tricky and the purl stitch is super easy. Using the knitting pin really helps keep even tension.

I read about this style of knitting on Ravelry quite a while ago. I watched a video demonstrating this technique on You Tube and practiced a bit but quickly gave up on it since I don't care to have the yarn around the back of my neck. Andrea's DVD is easy to understand and to follow.

The DVD covers the knit and purl stitch, increasing and decreasing, three different cast-on and three different bind-off methods. (There may be a little more, but this is what I can remember after watching it once). She has a DVD covering knitting socks and will be publishing a book on this style of knitting. I'm going to keep practicing this style before buying the other offerings.

My progress on Elizabeth has slowed a bit. I have completed 2 inches of the body and have 18 inches to go. Endless knitting in garter stitch isn't too interesting but it is looking nice.

Different Needle = Much Better

I am so glad I decided to go down to a size 8 needle. I picked up all those stitches and started knitting continental. I knit loose when I knit continental and felt a size 8 would be a good choice. No rowing or at least it's minimal.

The yarn store was having a big sale; I browsed and walked away with only the needles. I was pretty proud of myself as I saw some lovely yarns (not on sale) and did not bite. Hard to do but I have vowed to work through a lot of my stash before buying too much new yarn. My purchase of the Comfort yarn has been all I have bought in a long time.

Also, I have worked on my socks a little, too. Today I thought I would try a short row heel. I have some experience with heel flaps and gussets and since these socks are toe up and I was not happy with the Eye of Partridge heel, I ripped back to do a short row heel. Well, it was not turning out quite right, so ripped it out again. I'll try again tomorrow. :)

Decision Time

I picked up all 264 stitches for the garter stitch body on Elizabeth. The pattern calls for size 10-1/2 circs. I have knit a few rows and not sure I like the garter stitch rows. Using a larger needle than the yarn calls for and getting this rowing effect just doesn't look right.

I went to Berroco to see if there was any corrections for this pattern. The only correction was in the amount of yarn needed for the project. The pattern originally stated 10 hanks of Ultra Alpaca, which I bought, and the correction is 4 hanks. Whoa! Big difference!

So far, I have used about 1-3/4 hanks so I can make a big decision here (I don't want a lot of yarn left over). Rip out and use 2 strands of yarn with the size needle I'm using now or use one strand and use a smaller needle? Using two strands of yarn might make the body too bulky. Going down to a size 8 or 9 might be a better option. I'm sure I will still have 4 hanks left over that I could use for something else.

I have put in way too much work on the neckband and certainly want to be satisfied with the end result. Since I'm away from home at the moment and don't have access to my needles, I will have to let her sit until I get home.

Good thing I brought some sock yarn with me. ;)

Elizabeth Update!

I finished the neckband!!! I just came across a free pattern from Ravelry for Leyburn Socks in the Quitled Lattice pattern. Since I have a blank canvas for the socks that are unfinished, I may use this pattern for the leg. But then again, there are some great patterns in Cookie's book.

I was able to work on Elizabeth yesterday and will get some work done on her today. I'm in the process of packing for a two week trip to my son's. I will be taking some extra sock yarn and my book just in case I get a good amount of work done on Elizabeth. Once I'm done with the neckband, the body of the shawl will go pretty fast. I am determined not to abandon her and to see the project to the end! It started out a little slow; introducing characters, etc. It's a murder mystery set in Massachusetts around a knitting store and the loyal knitters of the community. So far, I'm enjoying it.

I'm waiting for Cookie A.'s new book "Sock Innovation" and "Knitting Socks With Handpainted Yarns" by Carol Sulcoski. I have a ridiculous stash of variegated yarns and hope to get some insight on the best way to use it for knitting socks. My goal is to get the WIPs finished before diving into any more projects.

I received two skeins of Berroco Comfort yarn and Berroco pattern booklet #269 "The Family Comfort Zone". I'm going to knit Geometta for my granddaughter. The yarn is a nylon/acrylic blend, easy care, and quite soft. I knit a swatch today and like how the yarn knits up.

I'm still working on Elizabeth just not getting to work on her as much as I'd like, so not much progress.

Mojo is Good!

When I was lacking any motivation to knit, I would think about it; a lot! Now that I have been doing some knitting almost every day, it feels so good!

Perhaps in the future, instead of complete abandon, I should take mini knitting breaks. These months and months breaks are just too long.

I was able to knit a few rows of Elizabeth this morning. The grandson is home with me today and wanted to get something done before he woke up.

I decided to pull out those Shadow Rib socks that I blogged about last year; I forgot that I had changed my mind on the pattern. Anyway, I'm doing the leg in Charlene's Shadow Rib pattern from her Little Box of Socks.

I did some work on those this weekend. I thought I could rip back the one sock that was complete, but was too small around the top, pick up the stitches and add ribbing. Not so....I went ahead and ripped it back to just above the heel and will do the whole pattern section over. I do, afterall, want the socks to look nice...;)

Elizabeth Shawl Update

The shawl is coming along nicely. The neckband measures 42" long; only 30" to go!

I have been having a great time working this pattern. There is enough variety to ease boredom and enough variety that I haven't been able to memorize it. Good stuff.

Once I am done with the neckband, I will pick up 264 stitches and knit in garter stitch for the body.

I received my Signature Arts Needles...wow!...they are nice! I bought a pair of size 7, 7" straights. I love my Addi Lace Needles, which I was using when I started Elizabeth. The Signature Arts are fantastic! I am generally not a straight needle knitter. I don't like how straight needles are always catching on my sleeves. When I saw they were offering needles in shorter lengths, I wanted to try them. I also bought a pair of size 6 in 10" length. I wanted the 7" length but failed to change the length when I ordered them as part of a scarf kit (with a skein of cashmere yarn, yum). I am going to contact them to see if I can exchange the 10" for the shorter length.

I may, in the future, order a set of their double points. I love the stiletto point. A bit finer point than the Addi Lace Needles. I will never abandon my Addi's and can't see myself ordering too many of the Signature Arts; it is nice for a change and they are finely tuned needles!

Elizabeth Shawl

I'm knitting and I'm having a blast!!!!

March 8th, I cast on for the Elizabeth Shawl which is Berroco Patterns #263 (Family Tree Knitting Collection). I'm using Berroco Ultra Alpaca in Brown Rice. I bought this pattern and yarn 2 years ago. I tried my hand at the pattern and kept making mistakes. Ripped it out, put it away until the time came that I felt I could successfully complete the project.

It really is quite simple once I converted the written pattern to a chart. So much easier on the eyes and keeping my place. I also found I would consistently make a mistake in the same area. That's where lifelines are coming in handy. I think having the chart to read and the lifelines, I'm knitting with confidence and relaxed.

Here's a picture I took this morning to visually explain the lifeline to a friend:

I'm not too happy with the k2tog on the inside of the garter stitch border. Hopefully it will all work itself out once I block it.

At any rate, I'm going to keep going and enjoying the process.

How does one ever explain to a non-knitter the sheer joy of sitting down with needles and yarn?

I ordered a set of needles from Signature Art Needles as well as a kit with cashmere yarn, pattern and another set of needles. They look beautiful and they come in sizes as short as 7" for straights. They are making double point needles now, too. I always use my Addi Turbo's for everything and thought it would be cool to have a pair of short straights for lacy scarves. I'll blog about them when I receive them!

Until then, happy knitting and Happy Spring, well almost....

Oh yeah, the temperature here tomorrow will be in the high 70's!!! ;)

Some "Me" Time is Coming

My little grandson will start back to preschool on Monday! We moved at the first of the year and my daughter removed him from the preschool that was near the apartment. She found a smaller, really nice preschool just down the street.

All of the teachers are actually accredited teachers; the last center had the feel of young kids there to "babysit". He picked up some bad habits, that have since been rectified, that won't be tolerated in the new center. It's quite impressive.

He will go 3-days a week being with me Tuesday and Thursday. Perfect.

I have a long list of things I want to do with the time I will have to myself:

Knit
Focus on nutrition and exercise
Paint the kitchen and living room
Spend some time meandering on the beach
Knit
Knit
Knit

That about sums it up! I miss my knitting and need to hear the clicking of needles. Once the weather warms up, I can even take some knitting out and sit at the beach. The grandson is back with me during the day and by evening, I'm exhausted and don't feel like knitting. His mom is going to be looking into part-time pre-school. There are programs on M-W-F which would be perfect. I love having him with me all day and I do need some time to myself. I'm tired of feeling tired all the time.

We had some glorious weather here on the coast for about a week and a half. Temperatures in the low 80's with a lot of sunshine. Unusual for this time of year and was extremely enjoyable. It rained yesterday and has been quite cool and cloudy today.

I'm sticking to my knitting resolution and finishing up those projects. The grandson's sweater will have to be frogged since he's growing like a weed and it's already a bit too small. Oh well......one less project to finish. ;)

A New Year!

My blog is now a year old. Where did 2008 go? We always ask that question, right?

We moved out of our apartment on Monday and have been trying to get the new digs unpacked and squared away. We're making progress and should have the kitchen completely functional tomorrow.

I have been on a "less is more" kick for over a year and really started looking at things I'm unpacking in the kitchen and realizing I have things I haven't used therefore I don't need. I'm sure somebody else will get more use out of this stuff than I do. Purging "stuff" is so freeing.

My knitting resolutions are: get the socks finished for the grandson; finish the scarf; finish the sweater and the hat that I cast on the other day. Whew! I need to get busy!

I hope everyone enjoyed their holidays and wish all a happy and healthy 2009 with lots of knitting. :) !!

Knitting

Yep, knitting has been happening; I am a slow but steady knitter.

This morning I cast on for a Seaman's Cap to match his new winter coat my daughter bought for him. I had been trying to change the look of my blog with free templates. That wasn't working for me since I'm not too code savvy. The backgrounds don't require changing the template (start off with bloggers Minima template). A simple copy of the code, add html/java in customizing, copy the code, save and voila! I really like the color but it's heck to work with. It seems I have cast-on 2 or 3 different projects just to rip it out. It's rather strange to work with and feels like it could be a bit itchy. Same with Labor Day; the end of summer and winter was right around the corner. I dreaded Labor Day as we always started the new school year the very next day! I wish I would have been one of those kids that loved school and couldn't wait to go back. I'm looking forward to Fall/Winter. The older I get, the more I dislike warm/hot weather. I think I'm becoming a fair weather person; must be the hot flashes. :)

I'm about to cast-on a scarf for my oldest daughter and it's going to be in the broomstick stitch. I watched a YouTube video the other day from Stitch Diva and it looks easy and interesting. We went to see Jethro Tull perform tonight! Whatta show! This was their last stop of their 40th year tour. Awesome performance; Ian Anderson is such a great performer, musician, commentator, etc. The old guys can still rock n' roll!

Funny, we saw Elton John in April. That was the 2nd time for us, the first in 1992 (which was really good). I didn't even mention it as it was just ok. Tonight's concert was much more energetic and fun!

I pulled out some cotton last night, cast on and knit a few rounds of a wash cloth. Knitting is such a great way for me to decompress, but lately the stress level has been higher than usual and by evening I'm just too tired to have to focus on my knitting.

I'm also in the process of getting my nutrition under control and beginning an exercise routine using kettlebells.

I'm one of those people who always plan on it, say I'm going to start on it tomorrow and then never does. It's now or never! I'll probably start another blog to document my journey. I can't believe it's been almost a month since I've updated my blog!

I'm in the process of knitting a pair of socks for my grandson. It's a simple sock, started from the top with 1" of 2 x 2 ribbing and 2 pattern repeats of the Slip Stitch Waffle Rib pattern from Vogue Knitting - The Ultimate Sock Book. I'm through the heel and gusset decreases and on to the endless rounds of stockinette stitches to the toe.

I should have completed these socks by now, and I have to admit, I get a little bored with my projects. At any rate, the progress is going well; as in no major mistakes and ripping out.

Hope every one is having a great July 4th weekend!

A Very Special Day

Happy 2nd Birthday to my youngest grandson!!

He was born 6 weeks early, weighing 3 lb. 12 oz. and spent 5 weeks in the NICU. His mother, my daughter, had developed severe pre-eclampsia. The plan was to keep her pregnant for 2-3 weeks and she would be in the hospital as she was on magnesium sulfate, antibiotics, etc. Well, her body started rejecting the pregnancy and little man was in agreement and they had to let her deliver which was uneventful.

While he was in the hospital, we only had one scare; he had developed necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC). This is a condition where the colon and intestines start dying. If not caught in time, it's fatal. They caught it really early, withheld his feedings and administered antibiotics. After 7 days they were able to start his feedings and he recovered just fine.

He hasn't suffered from any delays in development or motor skills. He's picking up new words everyday. He's a healthy, rambunctious 2 year old and we wouldn't have him any other way!

On the knitting front, not much is happening. After, what 4 attempts on socks, I'm just taking a breather.
<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_CaxwvV4RCWY/SFcnvq4sN0I/AAAAAAAAAV0/vqY7_KEUilc/s200/doily+swatch.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5212678793624041282" />
I did knit 24 rounds of a doily that turned out pretty good. I've only ever crocheted doilies. Ravelry has been a great source for learning and finding some great patterns! I'll find that project that jumps out and begs to be knit. Since I enjoyed knitting the sweater for my birthday boy, I may go ahead and make another one. I like that the toes are rounded. I love the pattern and will definitely re-do this very soon.

On the other hand, I have another pair of socks on the needle and will use the Tidal Wave pattern by Deby Lake. This is a Tofutsies sock club pattern but I'm using Lorna's Laces in the Jeans colorway. The toes are complete and I'm knitting in stockinette stitch all the way up the foot. The pattern will be incorporated on the leg only.

Well, that's the update. Eventually I will actually have a completed project. Seems, lately, I knit to rip. After 2 rounds on the Faceted Rib Socks pattern, I put them down and will rip back and figure out what pattern to do with my completed toes. Whenever a sock pattern calls for a purl stitch at the beginning of a round or at the beginning of the next needle, I always end up with terrible ladders. This is what was happening with this pattern. Any tips or tricks anyone can give me to eliminate ladders because of purl stitches, I'm all ears! :)

I'm going to get adventurous tomorrow and rip back the crazy monkeys and keep going. I really like the pattern and have missed knitting these.

The last 3 days I have been crocheting a doily. Of course I couldn't resist the purchase once I felt how soft the yarn is and the color combinations were really nice, too.

Came home, cast-on two toes at once using Judy's magic cast-on. I've tried magic loop before and didn't care for it; at the time I felt the circ wasn't long enough at 32" which is why I bought the 40". I like the 40" much better and the toes are working up nicely.

I bought "The Little Box of Socks" by Charlene Schurch and Beth Parrott the other day. I have both of Charlene's Sensational sock books, that are in storage at the moment, and saw the little box and knew I would find some nice patterns to keep me busy. The little box did not disappoint; there are 20 note pad size, laminated pattern cards. The Faceted Rib sock pattern looks interesting and easy.

I'll post a picture when I have a little more done than just the toes.

Ho Hum

Well, the crazy monkey socks are both on 2 circs as I previously posted. Unfortunately, that process wasn't too flawless...one sock had a missing stitch. Couldn't tell where it had gone (dropped off, etc.) so I attempted to add a stitch, which then threw my pattern off (how does that happen, I don't know). Sigh......

Lifeline! Nope, didn't do that either; do I ever regret that! I'm putting these socks away until I am up to frogging them both back to a place I know all was right.

Lesson learned, again, must use a lifeline!

One become Two

Well, sort of.....I wasn't so sure I was going to be able to figure out how to work both socks on 2 circs. I have a book that illustrates this technique, quite clearly, but the book is unavailable to me at the moment. I went on memory (which isn't always a good thing) and dove right in. It worked! I can work both socks at the same time!

It was a bit fiddly at first as I didn't realize that I would have a loop with the circ that is being worked until I completed the second sock (1/2 round). I thought I had done something wrong. I just kept going and realized all is well. Whew!

Sock #2

The first sock is coming along nicely but I could already feel second sock syndrome creeping in. So last night I decided to cast on and begin the second sock; I'm almost done with the toe. Once the second sock is where I am on the first sock, I'll transfer the second sock onto the same 2 circular needles with the first sock and finish them up together. I have been wanting to try 2 socks on 2 circs for awhile and felt the time is now!

So why didn't I do that in the first place? I don't know...I suppose it was out of fear of not being able to do it. This is my year of fearless knitting so there isn't a better time than the present! Wish me luck!

The double points I am using on my second sock are Lantern Moon. Size 1 dpns are sure fragile! I have read a lot of incidence where these needles will break in the middle of a project. I am being really careful not to put too much stress on them. So far so good.

Oh and remember where I complained about the Tofutsie splitting? That must have been one of those off days as I haven't experienced any problems with the yarn while knitting these socks. I now love working with this yarn! Where does the time go; seems like yesterday we got married. I guess that happens when you find your true love. :)

I'm thankful that our kids strive to have the kind of relationship that they have witnessed over the years. We don't fight, ever! I have probably been mad at him more over the last 2 years than any other time in our 21 years (I'll blame it on menopause).

He is a kind and compassionate man; I have learned so much from him by just watching him. I couldn't have hoped for a better human being to spend my life with!

We usually spend our anniversary in Sonoma County (No. California Wine Country), which is our most favorite place. Unfortunately work schedule got in the way.

On the knitting front; nothing today. I've been busy painting bedrooms. I'd rather be knitting. :)

Frogged

Yep, I frogged the Passion Flower Sock. And, the first day I haven't had to take pain reliever.

Apparently it was a virus as my son came down with it a couple of days ago. I was visiting with him when I came down with it and now he has it. I hope he gets over it faster than I did! We are moving, out of state, in a couple of weeks and I'm determined to clear things out. I'm drowning in things I have had no use for and have been hanging onto for 20 years! We have a new Goodwill store down the street and I'm going to help them fill it up!

I hope I can cast on a pair of socks in the next couple of days. That sure would help ease the process and stress of packing and moving!

Feeling Better

I was hit hard on Thursday with something that has been uncomfortable and frustrating. The symptoms are headache, muscle cramping, chills and nausea. I find out today, it's not a virus but electrolytes are out of balance. I felt it was something like that since I was craving bananas.

Since the headache was bad enough, it's been hard to focus and concentrate on knitting, therefore, no knitting. :(. At least was able to finish little guys sweater before this crap hit. Oh and the sweater fits him; it looks really cute!

So I'm about 85% back to normal and ready to cast-on.

I'm in the Tofutsies Sock Club and received the February color. It is fabulous! I also bought the Stitches Limited Edition 4-pack (Tofutsies) and all the colors are fantastic; it also came with a CD with 10 patterns. Now I have to decide what to do first. It gets too overwhelming when there are so many things I want to knit and there are too many choices. After I decreased, about 3 times, it was looking like I was going to run into the same problem as the first sleeve. So, I got out the calculator, figured out my row gauge and how many rows it will take to get the sleeve length I need. Figured out how many times I need to decrease and came up with decreasing every 6 rows. It's worth a try, right?

On the first sleeve, the pattern stated to decrease every 3 rows. That didn't work. On the second sleeve I decided to decrease every 4 rows. Still not going to work. If my modification doesn't work, the little guy is going to have either a big sleeve or no sleeves.

I just love a challenge and I'm determined to figure this out!

Wish me luck!

Still on the Sweater

I should be done with this sweater. This is an easy pattern; following the pattern to a "T" and I have run into more problems!

I finished one of the sleeves the other day, following the pattern exactly, and it didn't turn out right. Decreasing as per the pattern, left me with the number of stitches I was supposed to end up with, but about 3 inches too soon. I'll have to frog back and redo. Now I'm on the second sleeve, decreasing every 4 rows instead of 3 and I'm going to run into the same problem. I think I mentioned, in an earlier post, that the neck back I finished is too small. Little guy's head won't go through. I'll be fixing that, too.

My grandson was born 6 weeks early and was a tiny little guy. He's almost 20 months and is catching up quickly but still on the small side. The sweater size that I chose, when you look at the finished chest size in the pattern and the chest size of my grandson, was pretty close; sleeve length was pretty close, too. So why oh why, am I having so many problems. I've checked the web site of the pattern designer to see if there was any errata; nope.

I'm sure my problems are simply me being inexperienced. I'm not giving up; all will work out!

Boy oh boy, the sweater.......

My first simple top down raglan sweater was going great, until.......

I must have stretchd the sweater trying to measure it's length. My measurement was 12", added the three rounds of ribbing, and bound off. You probably already know what I'm about to say; it was too short! Ribbing and all, it measured 11". I took a break from it for the day and picked it up last night frogging back a few rows.

What I should have done, before starting the ribbing, was to add a lifeline, just in case. Had I ran the lifeline, frogging back and picking up stitches would have been a lot easier. Instead, I attempted to add the lifeline, then rip it back just above the ribbing; started to pick up stitches and had to fiddle with it for about an hour as my lifeline wasn't in a straight line. Lesson learned! I finally got the sweater back on the needle and continued on with my project. No ribbing, just continued on in stockinette. All is well, length is good and bound off.

I picked up the stitches for the neckband (using smaller needles, as the pattern states). Knit 5 rounds in stockinette and bound off. Guess what? The neck is too small; it won't go over my grandsons head! I'll be ripping that out, picking up the stitches, and using a larger needle, knitting 3 rounds in ribbing!

I'm not at all discouraged by these couple minor problems; it's a great learning experience! I have picked up the stitches for one of the sleeves; so far so good.

My First Sweater!

I am really excited! I cast-on for my first sweater, a simple top down raglan (Knitting Pure & Simple pattern) for my grandson, and it's going really well! I've been wanting to knit sweaters and thought a small one would be a good project to start with. It's so much fun!

I'm using a wool/acrylic blend by Universal Yarn (Classic Worsted Tapestry). I really like how the color pattern is coming out. I'm also practicing my newly learned continental knitting, which is going really well, too! My gauge is a little loose and probably should have gone down a needle size. Oh, well, next time. As a matter fact, I was so excited about this sweater, I went by the yarn store today and bought some more of this yarn to knit another one when I'm finished with this one!

Well, that's about it! Back to my sweater!

Round and Around and Around

My Maine Morning Mitts are finished. I'm so glad I discovered 5" dpns; so much easier to work with on small diameter projects. I practically gave up on them as the only length I had worked with previously was 7". Socks, mittens, etc., workout much better with the shorter length. When I first saw how short they were, I didn't think I could use them. Well, I tried them and I like them! I have about half a skein left which I'll use up and add some length to the Basket Weave Scarf.

Next up - a simple top down sweater for my grandson. This will be my first try and thought a small sweater would be good for practice.

Knittin' Again

Geez, I had a few days where I would cast-on for a project and decide I didn't want to knit it; frog, continue.

I had started the Dashing fingerless gloves and lost interest. I have viewed a few videos on youtube and find it interesting the different techniques that are used. Doing a knit stitch in continental is pretty easy; doing a purl stitch was harder and awkward.

I was perusing discussions at Ravelry the other night and came across a link to a video explaining and demonstrating the continental style; http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XuRLFl36tDY Lorilee's explanation and demonstration in a slow, smooth manner really helped me "get it"! Her way with the purl stitch was what made the most sense and I like how she "picks up" the working yarn during the knit stitch. I'm not ready to take on a project knitting this way, but I'll keep practicing.

Ravelry is a great resource for knitters. Waiting for the invitation to join is well worth it. If your a knitter and haven't heard of Ravelry, go and sign up for the invitation.

Knit On!

When all else fails, just keep knitting!

Sat down with the "Open Waters" shawl yesterday to begin the process of finishing only to discover that I'm not happy with the stitching. I am using Addi Natura circs; the Lorna's Laces Lion & Lamb yarn is dragging too much, distorting the stitches. Stopped by the lys today and picked up a set of Plymouth dpns for my "Dashing" project and a set of Addi Turbo circs for the shawl. I'm sure the needles will be too slick but I'm willing to deal with that to get better stitch definition.

When I was knitting the Basket Weave scarf with Malabrigo, I was using Addi Turbo's and loved the way the stitches look. I'm using some left over yarn for the Dashing fingerless gloves and was using Brittany dpns; the drag on the needles was too much and was driving me nuts! Switched the project over to one turbo circ and one natura circ; better but I don't want to deal with 2 circs. That's where the Plymouth dpns come in that I picked up today. I have recently discovered that I like knitting with 5-6" dpns. My previous experience with dpns was with a length of 7-1/2", which is too long and they got in the way (smaller diameter circular knitting, like socks).

Switched Dashing over to the shorter needles and all is right again! (I know, I said I wouldn't start anymore project until the shawl was done....what can I say, it's a knit-thing!)

One of those days....

Every once in a while, we knitters, experience "one of those days". At least when I do go to bed, I'm sleeping straight through. Oh the pleasures of menopause. :)

I pulled out the Open Waters shawl, my final wip. I started it in August; made great progress until I reached the five rows of seed stitch. 130-something stitches in seed stitch. I'm not starting anything new until this is done! (I'm trying the "rewards" system)

I have plans for socks, socks and more socks. When I went through my stash, I discovered more sock yarn than I had remembered. I ordered an instructional dvd and blocking wires from Knit Picks; unfortunately, I read, after I placed the order, that the warehouse was closed for a big move and shipping would resume on 1/2. Who knows when my stuff will ship......

I have had a hard time trying to figure out, by reading tutorials on-line, on knitting two socks on two circs. So the dvd I ordered will show me how to do it. Must get it finished.....The Open Waters shawl will be the last wip to finish.

After inputing all of my stash at Ravelry, I vowed to a yarn diet. I went into my lys yesterday to pick up a set of dpns and proudly walked out with only the dpns! Not an easy fete, but possible.

8:00 pm: The scarf is finished!!!! I used one skein of Malabrigo as my husband wanted a short scarf. I have another skein that I'm going to use to make him a pair of Dashing fingerless gloves. With any leftover yarn I have, I'll pick up stitches on the scarf and lengthen it until I run out of yarn. As is, the scarf measures 40" long, unblocked. My husband, basically, wanted a neck warmer; long enough to wrap around his neck, cross in the front and stuff under his coat.

He really likes it and I'm glad to, finally, have it "finished".

I Made It!

The mittens are done with just a little bit of dark brown to spare. Started the "Easy Mittens" from One-Skein Wonders in early November. I was just beyond the ribbing when I put it down and only occasionally picked it up for a round or two. Knitting the hat for Landon and the felted clogs for me is a new record and has inspired me to get through the WIPs I have.

I finished the one mitt and cast-on the second! When I started the first one, I was using the magic loop; maybe it's the 32" cable and probably would have worked better on a 40" cable but I got tired of dealing with the "loops" and switched the mitt over to dpn. I'm not a big fan of dpn but it worked out good and was a lot more manageable. Doesn't hurt to practice, right?!?

After the mittens, I must finish hubby's scarf. I love the yarn and the pattern but I get bored and feels, at times, like this scarf will never end. After that, finish up the shawl (it's 75% done!) and then I can go for some other things I have in the queue at ravelry.

Happy New Year!

Comfortable day here with temperature's in the low 70's.

The finished clogs have been felted and are in the process of drying.
